With most of us still working from home due to the global pandemic lockdown restrictions, we recently launched our employee spotlight series. Without further ado, here is Gemma de Clerck, our Office & HR Manager.

Q1. How long have you been with Object Matrix?

7 years, how time flies when you’re having fun!

Q2. What does your job entail?

Since returning on a part-time basis from maternity leave in the summer, I look after all HR matters, organise the international travel, arrange employee events (summer BBQ, Christmas celebrations etc), support my awesome assistant Kirsty and work closely with the Ops Team. 

Q3. What aspect of your role do you enjoy the most?

Being part of a close-knit company, supporting others, being trusted to explore solutions that work and knowing that every day will be different.

Q4. What is your proudest moment at Object Matrix?

Probably successfully achieving the office move with minimal disruption (only a couple of pedestals got clobbered in the van which was sadly, beyond an RMA) and finding Capital Tower with its glorious views. It was humbling watching everyone muck in to make it happen and realising the previous months’ planning and packing efforts came into fruition, watching people go above and beyond to support the big techi-move and then seeing everyone enjoy the new office space!  

Q5. Tell us about a life experience that has influenced the way you approach work?

Becoming a new mum 18-months ago and then a working-mum 5-months ago is a life changing experience. You suddenly go from doing stuff for yourself and colleagues to having this little human that totally depends on you and it comes with bags of responsibility. I am grateful for the flexi-hours and WFH opportunity because it enables me to be my son’s main carer whilst continuing to support everyone at OM. I’ve always loved problem-solving and spending time with my colleagues and I am grateful for everyone’s support, especially for jumping online with me during Charlie’s nap-times to get stuff done and not minding too much if he’s yapping away in the background. I hope Charlie will see me as a positive role-model and to realise the importance of having a strong work-ethic which mirrors credit and pride for his efforts.

Q6. Describe Object Matrix in 3 words

Collaborative, Flexible, Supportive

Q7. What was your first job?

From about 12-years old, I had several paper rounds and then at 14 I also worked in a hairdressers after school and on Saturdays. 

Q8. What are your top 3 life highlights?
  • Having my son, Charlie
  • Bungee jump in Prague (wasn’t brave as I had to be pushed but then the massive high was realising that I survived, yay)!
  • Passing my driving test (I wasn’t a natural and worked hard and took many lessons to pass 3rd time lucky)

Q9. What is on your bucket list?

Enjoying Jack Whitehall’s Travels with my Father and would love to have a similar experience travelling the world with my son when he’s older (if I haven’t become totally uncool by then).

Q10.  What’s your secret talent no one knows about?
Enjoying a spot of crafting, scrabble-art and upcycling. There is something fulfilling about making something that was once loved, good again whilst also reducing waste and sometimes saving a penny or two.
